Manhattan tire son nom du lenape, langue algonquienne commune à plusieurs tribus de la nation Delaware. “Manna-hata” semblait signifier “l’île aux collines”. L’île a été vendue en 1626 aux Néerlandais pour quelques florins par le chef Sagisgura, le sachem de la tribu des Lenape appelée également “loup” par les Français.
