Published in the early 1920s, “The Messenger” was a political and literary magazine meant for African-American readers. It contributed to the development of the Harlem Renaissance and to the acknowledgment of Black American culture. The May 1923 issue was titled “The New Negro” and featured the black silhouette of Rodin’s “Thinker”.
